Turmeric is the bright yellow, aromatic rhizome (underground stem) of the Curcuma longa plant, a perennial in the ginger family. It is widely used as a spice in curries and other dishes, a dye, and a component of traditional medicine for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties attributed to a compound called curcumin.
